U and R values

We have a south facing conservatory and are concerned about the quality of the glass roof. When it was quoted we were told the glass would be equivalent to other suppliers (75% heat reflection). The glass fitted has a 1.2 U value, but is only 23% heat relfective. The supplier assures us that this will keep the conservatory cool in summer. We are not convinced of this fact and do not know how to find out other than waiting for summer. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Trevor.

Re: U and R values

23% "heat reflection" is blatantly not as good as 75% "heat reflection", why one earth would you believe anyone who told you it was?

It's as stupid as saying I'll build you a 10m? conservatory and it will be just as big as a 20m? one.

Hi
Ask the company to come along with a heat lamp and prove how good it is

Re: U and R values

We were not told the values before the conservatory was built and unfortunately the contract only says heat reflective glass. We only received the figures recently - after requesting them before the job started. The sales person did not quote any figures but did say the conservatory would be usable year round and glass would be of the highest quality and equivalent to other suppliers quoting for the job. At present we are holding back some money, but are not sure if we have a valid reason to do this. Can anyone advise us what to do? Who do we need to contact?

Thanks.

Re: U and R values

According to figures I have (probably obtained form the Pilkington website) clear, normal, standard glass is 24% heat reflective.

Standard Pilkinton anti-sun glass is around 50% solar reflective and in my experience not good enough for a south-facing conservatory, you do need glass with 75%.

Even with 75%, you could never guarantee that it would be "usable year round", there are many other factors to consider. The sales person was clearly talking rubbish and unfortunately you believed him.

Re: U and R values

Trevor,

I wouldn't shout fire like everyone else, get the data from the glass supplier.
Bizarrely they maybe just be quoting their figure in reverse to the others you had quoted at you (75% reflection or 25% transmission).

Get the data from them, but I guess youve already hd some hot days this year anyway so probably already know.
