Question Granite worktop worries.

Hello out there, what shall I do,
I had a new kitchen fitted in April 07 and 4 months later have found a hairline crack in the granite worktop running from the sink recess to the front edge and down each side, but not right through to the underside. [They tell me that this should never happen, have I been jumping on it!]
The company involved have offered to repair it with a filler and polish it. Should I accept this, or hold out for a new replacement ? I am concerned that repairing the fault will cause more problems later. Should I accept what is offered. Please give me your opinion.

Sorry Jean Two, it isn't really possible to give an opinion from afar. If the width of granite between the sink recess and the edge is less than 100mm then it would be prone to cracking ... many granite companies won't provide a "cut out" with surrounds less than this width.

Having said that, once the granite is fitted there isn't usually a problem, as long as it is properly supported.

If the crack resulted from the fitting process (or from something unusual - like jumping on it!) then filling and polishing could well solve the problem. If the crack resulted from a lack of sufficient support to the fitted granite .. then you are likely to get more problems in the future.

Sounds like they did not install a front strengthening rail (aluminium angle) across the entire width of your sink cabinet.

If it was supplied and fitted by the kitchen company I would ask for a replacement top. Did you have a warranty supplied with your kitchen, did it cover the tops. ?? It is most lilkely faulty fitting so you shouldnt accept repair.
If they agree to replace then you need to ensure they fit correctly. Instructions here Fitting Granite kitchen worktops and UK nationwide service

Stop jumping on your worktop!
I would aim to have it replaced but I would doubt the company would agree. Under normal use I would expect it to be fine one they have sealed the crack.
