Clearance above gas hob

On a recent TV programme about cowboy kitchen fitters an installation was described as illegal because a wall cupboard was too close to the top of a gas hob. What is the minimum distance allowed and which regulations define such things? ???

Although a desired minimum distance of 760mm should be achieved. Different manufacturers set varying minimum distances within their installation instructions and these must be adhered to.
Cowboys however, decide their own minimum distances and a thorough check of their credentials will ensure that you won't be sitting around a camp fire in the middle of your kitchen.

Re:Clearance above gas hob

Having watched the aforementioned programme I can only say that I am glad I am not a kitchen expert!! What a K******d!! The man was a waste of space as far as so called experts go!! The programme was full of innacuracies from start to finish!!
The company concerned is well known in the kitchen industry and all was most likely true. But the so called expert??
On the one kitchen they showed an island with a hob fitted. The hob was installed using a flexible hose (as used for free standing cookers) this is in complete contravention of the law!! The hob should have been fitted with rigid pipework only!! But the expert never mentioned this!! Nor did he mention what the gaps should be with regard to the "Wrong drawings". This is because the hob (Being gas) should only!!! Be installed by a CORGI registered fitter!!
The presenter was in direct contravention of the law!! If the hob was electric then there are no regulations to cover the installation of this. So which was It?? Were the installers (expert/Presenters)breaking the law?? Or were they lying?? It had to be one or the other!!

Re:Clearance above gas hob

Sorry Chris but once again we have to differ.

Fixed domestic hobs may be installed using a flexible hose. The hob should be installed in accordance with manufacturer's installation instructions and BS 6172. The flexible hose to a natural gas supply should be manufactured to BS 669, Part 1. Similarly, LPG flexible hoses should also be manufactured to BS 669, Part 1(this may be identified with either a red band or a stripe). The hose must not be subject to heat in excess of 70?C, and should be positioned such that it will not suffer mechanical damage - i.e., abrasion from the surrounding kitchen furniture, which may be moved in use, such as a drawer or door.

As for having to be installed by a Corgi registered fitter, true, unless the installer was fully competent and not representative of gas installations in his business dealings. If, however, the installation was deemed unsafe and the above criteria were not met, the installer is liable to prosecution.

Re:Clearance above gas hob

Tim! I bow to your superior knowledge RE. Flexible hoses!!
But as to competence!! I was informed when I did my ACOPS that a competent person was a person who held a CORGI registration. And unless this has changed?? I will consult my business partner who just happens to be an ex. CORGI inspector.

OK Chris,

Good idea. Maybe we can put this issue to bed then. Unless, of course, your colleague agrees with you. ;D
Then - "I'll be back"
