Covering floor register?

Hello, is it ok to cover an existing floor register that the AC/heating unit uses? It is one of the many floor registers in our house. It is NOT the main 3' x 4' intake. We are wanting to put a countertop over it but didn't want to harm it or warp it due to the heat. If it is ok to close the register and cover it, what would you recommend for that? Wood plank, then match the existing linoleum? Thanks for your help.
