Noisy pipes(?) when flushing loo

Anyone any ideas what to do with a bloody awful noise round the house when the loo is flushed.? I've sussed out that if you run the cold water tap, it stops it.? The noise doesn't happen all the time.? Is it air in the pipes or something?
