choice of timber for quality shelving

Hi - I'm wanting to make fitted shelving for lots of heavy books. Thinking of using hardwood, as a) I want it to look good, and b) I imagine that'll make it possible to avoid bending and bowing under the load imposed without having to use very thick timber. The span is about 1200mm. Can anyone advise me on the pros and cons of particular varieties of timber? Thanks... Al

Re: choice of timber for quality shelving

not hardwood - but I like reclaimed pine - say at least 1 inch think

fo a supplier try http://www.traditionaltimber.co.uk - mind you I do not expect you require very much - so perhaps a this company will not be practical for you.

also at 1200 mm wide - you may need to have some mid-support

good article here:

Hi
Another way is to use Ply faced with hardwood and then use an edging strip, 1200mm is a bit too much to span for a book shelf in any timber, unless you are using thick timber
