choice of timber for quality shelving

Hi - I'm wanting to make fitted shelving for lots of heavy books. Thinking of using hardwood, as a) I want it to look good, and b) I imagine that'll make it possible to avoid bending and bowing under the load imposed without having to use very thick timber. The span is about 1200mm. Can anyone advise me on the pros and cons of particular varieties of timber? Thanks... Al
