Fitted carpet on top of marble floor?

Hi,

This might seem like a stupid question, but I'm about to move into a rented house which has marble flooring throughout the sitting room. We prefer wall-to-wall carpet so we'd like to have a fitted carpet laid on top, but the landlady is worried this will somehow damage her expensive marble flooring. And the room is really too large to make do with just rugs.

How would a carpet be fitted on top of marble? Presumably using some kind of wood edging strips which the carpet would then be nailed down onto? But would the strips have to be glued to the marble floor somehow? Can anyone shed any light?

Many thanks.

h.
