Sorry, Wary ... it would be great if there were some real bargain kitchens out there but, if they're very cheap, then you know that some corners must be getting cut.
The cheapest kitchens I know of ... where you know exactly what you're getting ... are IKEAs. They use white carcasses for everything - which I think looks really naff with timber doors - and they have limited unit sizes, but the quality isn't bad.
If I wanted a cheap kitchen makeover I'd go for a white (or possibly cream) IKEA kitchen (so you don't notice the cabs showing through) and splash out as much as I could afford on worktops (something in a warmer colour - even solid wood - to warm it up - or you could paint the walls in a warm colour like terracotta).
You need a fitter that knows IKEA kitchens though, because they have no recess at the back for pipes etc. and it can be best to get oversized worktops.
